A HUGE thank you to Carole Kenin Levin and Liz McElhatton for organizing the amazing Artist-in-Residency program this year. CircEsteem was in residence for a month at Willard, made possible by Willard PTA funds. The mission of CircEsteem is to help kids build self-esteem and mutual respect through the practice of circus arts. As a reminder, the Artist-in-Residence program is for 2nd and 4th grade students.

A belated thank you to Dian Keehan and Pam Tingley for another incredible parent-run, after-school Art Club! The kids and parents thank you for your time.

This year’s TV Tune Out Week is jam packed with events – the kids won’t miss the screen at all! Please note that this year will be different – with some events starting later in the evening. Notes from the Co-Presidents 3/4/13

You may be asking yourself “do we really have another 3-day weekend?” Yes, we do! Enjoy this Pulaski Day holiday with your kids. Casimir Pulaski Day is a holiday observed in Illinois on the first Monday of every March in memory of Casimir Pulaski (March 6, 1745 – October 11, 1779), a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born in Poland as Kazimierz Pułaski. He is known for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution by training its soldiers and cavalry.

With the snow on the ground and no sight of Spring, take advantage of FREE days for Chicago museums. Find out more here.

Don’t forget the next PTA meeting is next Tuesday night at 7PM in the Library!

IL 5Essentials Parent Survey

Teachers, parents and middle school students in District 65 and across Illinois have an opportunity to participate in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey: Organizing Schools for Improvement. The survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of our schools.  Your feedback will be used to help our District and the State learn more about what you identify as our strengths and challenges.

Please visit the Illinois 5Essentials website at https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois and complete the survey for your child’s school. If you have children in more than one school, it is important that you complete a survey for each school. The survey takes only 10-15 minutes to complete.

Don’t Miss the Willard Book Club’s 1st Meeting!

All parents are encouraged to read Carol Dweck’s book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Parents and teachers are invited to meet and discuss the book on Wednesday, March 13th at 7PM at Curt’s Café. The book is available for digital download and at local and national book retailers and you can learn more about the book at www.mindsetonline.com. Additional copies are also available from Mr. Michel.

We will be holding our Annual Spring Fundraiser on April 6th, 2013. This year our goal is to raise $20K, which will fund about 60% of the PTA budget for the year. Scouting for Food – Stop Hunger in Evanston
Willard’s Cub Scouts need your help restocking Evanston’s Hemingway Food Pantry. On March 2, our boys placed blue “Scouting for Food” door hangers across the neighborhood with information about what’s needed. To make a difference, just place a bag with food donations in front of your door by 9 am Saturday, March 9, and we’ll do the rest. Scouting for Food is Pack 929’s biggest service project and benefits families who need a hand right here in Evanston.  If you did not get a Scouting for Food flyer, you can just put a bag out front in a visible spot – we’ll have scouts looking for bags across the Willard area, or you can email us if a pickup was missed and we’ll send someone by. If you didn’t see a door hanger (they blow away), contact Andy Wade and we’ll make sure a helpful scout is on the
scene.

Welcome Back

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful, family-filled holiday and are ready for school to start again! We had a nice trip down to St. Louis to see family and returned for a big Saturday night Italian dinner with friends.

At the end of last year, parents took a survey about school climate and conditions. I share a summary of those results on my web page; they were generally extremely positive on all points. Even so, we continually look to grow and improve as educators here at Willard. Right now, our main two school improvement goals are to become more effective in our use of assessment strategies and data (which leads to greater differentiation) and to continue developing strategies that engage all learners in meaningful instruction. As we make progress on these goals, I will share them with you in a variety of presentations and communications. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call!

Thanks,

Jerry
